The Amphion Consort is named after the mythological lyre player (as told by Ovid in his
Metamorphoses) who built the walls of Thebes by moving the stones to fall in their places by the power and beauty of his playing.
The ensemble was initially formed to explore the repertoire for baroque violin and continuo (theorbo) and has been expanding
to include some of the best players and singers on the scene in order to perform chamber music and song recitals.
Their
repertoire ranges from Elizabethan lute songs by Dowland and Danyel, French music for viol and theorbo, instrumental
music by Heinrich Biber, German and French lute music, Spanish baroque guitar passacalles to Purcell, Handel and
Bach.
"Jennifer Bennett (baroque violin) and
Yair Avidor (theorbo) have a genuinely magical chemistry as performers of Biber's violin sonatas, with Jennifer delivering
a passionate, soulful and intelligent interpretation of these fascinating works. As exceptional musicians, they play with
great sensitivity, warmth and vigour combined with a dash of quirkiness, and are equally compelling to watch" Jane Cockcroft,
